Food Safety and Allergens

At Juniper we know that managing medical diets can cause a lot of anxiety for both parents and schools. That’s why we run a robust Medical Diet Policy, to ensure pupils are kept safe every day.

Juniper recognise the importance of the highest standards of food hygiene and operate a detailed food safety management system which meets the requirements of the three ISO standards we have. We have a detailed Food Safety Management System that all staff are trained in and a copy is held on each site for reference ensuring all the appropriate record keeping is maintained through the use of cloud based kitchen monitoring systems.

All staff complete Food Allergy Awareness Training annually, enabling them to have a thorough understanding of allergens and the potential dangers surrounding them, this training also includes Natasha’s Law and the specific requirements for pre-packed for direct sale food labelling legislation.

Allergen Information

We cater for 14 recognised food allergens: celery, crustaceans, dairy, egg, fish, gluten, lupin, molluscs, mustard, nut, peanut, sesame, soya, sulphites – we also support vegetarian and vegan diets. If your child requires any of these diets and would like a school meal, please ask your school office for an application form and be sure to provide a copy of your child’s medical referral. We will make the necessary arrangements as swiftly as possible ensuring that our catering team along with the school as well as yourself are kept informed of progress as our qualified nutritionist and dietitian work through the menu which will be bespoke for your child.

Every kitchen has a full analysis of any allergens contained in the dishes served in each of our schools and this is always available to view or an electronic copy is also available via our Contact Us page. We have full nutritional breakdowns of each recipe we prepare in schools to ensure we are meeting the School Food Guidelines. The portion sizes are calculations based on ingredient weights and do NOT take account of cooking losses or gains. The vegetable values are based on one full portion. If both vegetables on offer are selected the portion size and the carbohydrate value for each one will be halved.
