Working in partnership with the London Borough of Newham to promote free school meals
Posted December 13, 2022
Juniper are delighted to be working in partnership with the London Borough of Newham to promote free school meals in the schools in which they operate. Juniper operate in Newham and all Primary aged pupils benefit from free schools meals through both the Central Government, Universal Infant Free School Meals Grant and the Local Authority’s Eat for Free Grant providing all Primary aged pupils with the opportunity to eat a hot, healthy and nutritious school meal for free each day in their borough.
Research carried out by School Health UK every two years has illustrated what it would cost to prepare a packed lunch to the same nutrient standard of the school lunch each day. In 2018 the school meal option was 57.5% cheaper than a packed lunch, in 2020 it was 79.4% cheaper and this year they have announced it is 105% and, on each occasion, to ensure accuracy, these figures were calculated using pricing from the five largest supermarkets.
To help support schools in encouraging parents and guardians of primary aged pupils in Newham, Juniper have developed a Toolkit to enable them to send letters to parents and guardians, display posters in communal areas and social media content to promote school meals amongst their school communities.
We hope that this partnership approach will enable more pupils to enjoy a free school meal each day.
